About the Show

Words, music & songs by Hoagy Carmichael and Cole Porter

Conceived & Arranged by Darrin Murrell

“Hoagy & Cole” is a musical portrait of Indiana’s most famous musical composers, Hoagy Carmichael and Cole Porter, tracing their journeys from humble Hoosier roots to international success and musical legacies that continue today. Using their own words and music, the show highlights how they both started with similar upbringings and ended with similar legacies, but took wildly different paths to get there, with one continually reaching back to his Hoosier roots and the other putting as much distance between him and his home state as possible. The show is warm, humorous and nostalgic and includes people from the two composers’ lives including their Indiana families as well as their famous friends from Ethel Merman to James Whitcomb Riley to Red Skelton, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. The show is approximately 75 minutes long and features two pianos and more than thirty songs including CAN’T GET INDIANA OFF MY MIND, LET’S MISBEHAVE, UP A LAZY RIVER, DON’T FENCE ME IN, GEORGIA ON MY MIND, HEART AND SOUL, I’VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN, ANYTHING GOES, THE NEARNESS OF YOU, NIGHT AND DAY and STARDUST.

Originally commissioned & produced at The Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres, Nappanee, IN, 1997
